‘Dangerous’ Birmingham city centre street covered in darkness for two years may soon see light

A “dangerous” city centre street which has been covered in darkness for more than two years may finally see light. Concerns have been raised over a section of Corporation Street, from The Square Peg pub to Old Square, which has no street lighting.

Soft glows from inside the boozer, along with nearby shops, are the only light sources keeping it even slightly illuminated. Reiss Omari, who has been campaigning for lighting to be installed in the “downright dangerous” street since 2022, said the lack of action was “irresponsible”.

Posting a picture of the street at night on X this week, the fed-up Brummie said: “It’s now 2025 and this is still how Corporation Street looks. With buses now using the street both ways, having no lighting down here is just irresponsible.

“People are crossing between buses. We’ll see harm, or even death, if this is not sorted. It’s downright dangerous and unsafe.”

When we ran a story on this issue in 2023, Birmingham City Council said its Highways team were looking into it. But, 16 months later, nothing has changed.

However, in a fresh update, the authority has suggested there could be light at the end of the tunnel. The council told BirminghamLive that work is underway to get the supply reinstated – which was later confirmed by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM).

A council spokesperson said: “We’re aware of the lighting issues on the section of Corporation Street running from outside The Square Peg pub, to Old Square. The power supply to the highways-maintained lighting at this location was removed as part of the Metro Works.

“We have been in communication with Transport for West Midlands who are aware of the issue and are working to get the supply reinstated.”

A TfWM spokesperson told us: “We’re working with our contractors, the city council and the National Grid to restore lighting in the Corporation Street area as a matter of urgency.”
