‘Danger to life’ severe flood warnings in place in Wales

Four ‘danger to life’ flood warnings and 11 flood alerts are in place after heavy rain hit parts of Wales on the first day of 2025. Parts of north Wales saw heavy rain on Wednesday, which comes after the Met Office said there was almost a month’s worth of rain within 48 hours.

In Wales on Thursday morning Natural Resources Wales had four flood warnings and 11 flood alerts in place after heavy rain in parts of the north. The warnings are on the River Severn at Buttington, on the River Severn in the Welspool area and in the Pool Quay area, and also on the River Vyrnwy at Llanymynech. There are also reports of flooding on the the A44 in Aberystwyth from A4159 at the Lovesgrove Roundabout to the Glanyrafon turn-off. Temporary traffic lights are in place to help motorists.

Rail passengers are also being warned that the Conwy Valley line between Blaenau Ffestiniog and Llandudno will remain closed on Thursday. It comes after a tree fell on the line. Network Rail say teams have cleared the line but “more work is needed to ensure the route is safe”.

A clear-up operation is also under way after a major incident was declared in Greater Manchester when flooding forced homes to be evacuated and closed train lines and roads following heavy rain. Hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes on Wednesday as heavy rain battered the region..

The Met Office forecast for Wales on Thursday does not have much rain in it but it is going to feel much colder and there could be some wintry showers in the north. The forecast says; “After a frosty start with icy patches in places a dry day with plenty of sunshine for most. Wintry showers may clip western coastal areas at times, especially Anglesey, Gwynedd, and Pembrokeshire. Feeling very cold in the northerly breeze. Maximum temperature 4°C.

“Clear skies and light winds will allow for a very cold night with a widespread sharp frost and perhaps some ice in places. Isolated wintry flurries may clip western coasts. Minimum temperature -5°C.”
