Customers express their sadness as Othello closes its doors for the final time

Diners have expressed their sadness after a longstanding and popular restaurant in the heart of Grimsby has closed its doors for the final time.

On New Year’s Eve, Othello on Bethlehem Street welcomed customers for the last ever time, after the Greek restaurant was first opened in the 1970s by the late Cypriot restauranteur Vasos Vasilou.

Announcing the news on its Facebook page in September, Othello wrote: “The rumours are true! On 31.12.24 the Othello will close its doors for the very last time. The restaurant was opened by the wonderful Vasos in the 1970’s. Simon has proudly worked at The Othello for 26 years and owned it for 11 of those.

“We want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and choosing us time and time again whether it’s been for a weekday meal, a birthday, anniversary or a wedding- we’re so grateful to have been a part of it all.

“The time has now come for new adventures – but we want to see each and every one of you wonderful customers before we go.”

People have reacted with sadness to the news, with one person commenting on the Grimsby Live Facebook post: “So sorry to see the Othello closing, we have had some excellent food here and Simon has always made us very welcome. Unfortunately we have not been able to go as late as we cannot climb the stairs. Good luck Simon in whatever you decide to do next. You will be very sadly missed.”

“So sad to see The Othello close, we have shared many meals there with friends and family. For birthdays, anniversaries and many other special occasions, needless to say we shall be there tonight,” said another.

One customer said: “I had my wedding reception there in 1981. Brilliant then and carried on the same. Was there on 28th December. Will miss it.”
