Coventry school councillors get taste for politics with Downing Street visit

Aspiring young politicians got a taste of life at the top as they visited 10 Downing Street. Members of the school council at Balsall Common Primary, in Coventry, also had a guided tour of the House of Parliament during their trip to London.

They were able to see democracy in action and take part in a question and answer session with MP Saqib Bhatti. But the highlight was the trip to Downing Street, where they were able to stand outside the home of Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Manpreet Bains, assistant headteacher and school council lead, said: “This visit was an incredible experience for our 24 school councillors. It not only deepened their understanding of how our country is governed but also encouraged them to think critically about the importance of leadership, representation, and active citizenship.

“They returned full of ideas and enthusiasm, ready to continue making a positive impact within our school and community.” The school has thanked Mr Bhatti and staff at the Houses of Parliament and at 10 Downing Street, for their help.”
