Council urged to approve 150-home development for town

Another 150 homes could get the green light to be built in a North Somerset town this week.

The Vistry Group submitted a planning application to North Somerset Council in 2023 to build 150 homes on the edge of Nailsea. Now planning officers at North Somerset Council are recommending that the plans be approved when North Somerset Council’s planning committee meets on Wednesday.

The homes would be built across a 10 acre site just north of Hanham Way on the north west edge of the town. Vistry has said that the homes would be “gas-free” and just over half of the site would remain green space.

But 139 people have lodged objections to the plans on North Somerset Council ’s planning portal, with just three people commenting in support. One person warned: “The proposed access road is in a totally unsuitable position.

“My back garden literally backs on to the proposed access road and I, and all the residents at Kingshill Gardens Retirement Living complex are dreading the possibility of this lovely, quiet area being ruined.”

The 150 home estate would be accessed from just one road. Hanham Way would be essentially extended to go through 10 Watery Lane and into the development. Causeway View would become a turning off Hanham Way, instead of a continuation of the road.

But planning officers said that, while there were concerns over the road access to the development, it was not severe enough to justify turning down the plans. Recommending the plans be approved, council planning officers said: “The development will deliver much needed housing and 30% affordable housing, in a period where the council cannot demonstrate a five year supply of housing land. It will also deliver some employment during the construction phase.”

Their report added: “The illustrative master plan shows it is possible to develop the site in an attractive manner that is appropriate to the edge of the town and the proposed landscape strategy is considered to minimise harm on the edge of the moors.”

More details on the density of the development and its impact on the edge of the moors will be decided at a later stage in the planning permission process.

North Somerset Council’s planning committee will meet on Wednesday January 15 to decide the plans. The same meeting will also see them decide whether to grant planning permission for American medical technology company EPIC’s hugely controversial plans to build their European headquarters campus next to Long Ashton.
