Council issues 13-week road closure warning amid major town centre ‘upgrades’

Drivers are being warned of closures lasting potentially 13 weeks on a main Leicestershire junction. Officials at Leicestershire County Council (LCC) say the “upgrades” will improve traffic flow for both pedestrians and motorists.

The works, which are set to begin later this month, will be carried out at The Hollier’s Walk junction near Hinckley. The town centre junction links Derby Road, New Buildings, Leicester Road and Hollier’s Walk.

LCC said it will be “modernising” 20-year-old signalling equipment at the junction, improving “pedestrian connecting”, as well as aiming to “improve traffic flow”. The work also includes an “upgrade to the junction’s design” to allow for “safer traffic and pedestrian movement”.

As a result of the works, closures will be in place along Derby Road from its junctions with Hollier’s Walk to Alma Road, and New Buildings from its junctions with Leicester Road southwards towards the entrance of Aldi. Hollier’s Walk to Leicester Road will remain open in both directions.

In Hollier’s Walk, footpaths areas will be widened, while the existing footways will be resurfaced between it and Derby Road. In Derby Road and Leicester Road there will be shortened pedestrian crossings and a new ‘advance cycle stop-line’ will be introduced.

A new diagonal crossing point will also be introduced across the centre of the junction alongside “smart crossing and traffic detection technology”, which the local authority said would help to reduce journey and waiting times and improve junction capacity.

The junction’s road surface will also be renewed and energy efficient LED traffic signal heads will be installed. “Towards the end of the upgrade works”, a full road closure will be put in place to facilitate the resurfacing.

Councillor Ozzy O’Shea, cabinet member for highways said: “Hinckley is a busy, thriving town in Leicestershire and these upgrades to Hollier’s Walk will help keep traffic moving for both motorists and pedestrians. Investing in our road network is a key priority for the council and ensuring that equipment is up to date keeps us fit for the future.”

The works are set to begin on Monday, January 20. More information on the closures can be found on the one.network website.
