Cost of living: Major group set to miss out on €125 January electricity credit

The second and final €125 electricity credit is set to be applied to accounts beginning tomorrow, January 1.

This was announced as part of Budget 2025’s cost of living package, with the first one being paid from November 1. Together, these credits total €250 per household.

All households are eligible for these credits, but certain criteria must be met. Your property must pass the low usage threshold.

If it doesn’t, then the home will not qualify for either energy credit. The low usage threshold is where you use less than 150kWh (kilowatt-hour) of energy a quarter between September 1 2023 and August 31 2024.

The second credit will be made between January 1 and February 28 2025. The payment is automatic, and there’s no need to apply for it.

The date you receive your credit depends on when your supplier usually sends your bill, reports RSVP Live. The credit may not appear on your first bill during these payment periods, this depends on your individual billing cycle.

Suppliers have information on their websites with the exact dates the credit is shown on customers’ bills. You’ll see a ‘credit line’ on your bill for €114.68 (this is €125 excluding VAT).

The credit will be labelled as ‘Government Electricity Credit 1 or 2’ or a variation of this, depending on your supplier, for instance ‘Govt. Credit’. It should contain the words “Government”, “Govt” or “Gov” along with the number “1” or “2”, indicating the instalment you are receiving.

If you are a prepay meter customer, you will also receive the credit in the form of a top-up code sent by your energy supplier.
