Cornwall Council to trial change to notoriously busy junction in Saltash

Cornwall Council has announced it will be starting a new trial this month to change a notoriously busy junction in a Cornish town. Since the retail development on Gilston Road in Saltash opened in 2019, there have been many complaints from locals about the increase in traffic in the area.

Now, the council has said it will be implementing a six-month trial, starting on January 28, to restrict traffic at Gilston Road Junction from turning right onto Callington Road. Instead, traffic will now be directed towards the Pillmere roundabout.

Temporary signage will also be put in place to encourage traffic heading to the A38 west to travel via Burraton Road. A spokesperson for Cornwall Council said: “In response to concerns from the local community about congestion and safety on Gilston Road, we have agreed to temporarily restrict traffic from turning right at the junction with the B3271/Callington Road.

“From January 28, traffic leaving Gilston Road will be directed onto Pillmere roundabout. Temporary signage will be in place to encourage traffic heading to the A38 west to travel via Burraton Road.

“Monitoring will take place throughout the six-month trial to assess the impact of traffic movements in the area and level of community support for making the changes permanent.”
