Cork school closures: Latest update as buses and classes cancelled due to heavy snow

Many Cork schools will remain closed tomorrow for the safety of staff and students following heavy snowfall across the Rebel County today.

The majority of closures will be in the north and north-west of the county – impacting many schools and childcare settings across Mallow, Charleville, Macroom, Mitchelstown, Fermoy and surrounding areas.

It’s important to note that closures are decided independently by each facility’s board of management. Parents are advised to contact their children’s school or check their social media pages or emails for updates.

Some of the closures in Cork include – but aren’t limited to:

  • CBS Secondary, Mitchelstown – Teaching is moving online
  • Bright Sparks Childcare Centre, Mitchelstown
  • Bunscoil na Toirbhirte, Mitchelstown
  • Glenahulla N.S., Mitchelstown
  • Clondulane National School, Fermoy
  • Glantane National School, Mallow (parents are asked to check their Aladdin App for updates)
  • St. Mary’s Secondary School, Mallow
  • Dripsey National School, Dripsey
  • Boherbue Comprehensive School Page, Boherbue
  • Holy Family Special School, Charleville
  • Scoil Mhuire Milford, Kilbolane
  • McEgan College, Macroom

A number of schools in Cork city have also been contacting parents by text and email to say they will not start the school day tomorrow until 10am.

The Department of Education is monitoring the poor conditions and will issue updates as necessary.

Anyone commuting to work or school tomorrow is warned of dangerous travel conditions, even where roads have been gritted and ploughed. Unnecessary journeys should be avoided at all costs – employees should consider working from home where possible. You can stay up to date with all the latest road updates on Cork County Council’s X account here.

Commuters are also warned that there were heavy disruptions to public transport today, and these are likely to continue throughout tomorrow.

A Council spokesperson said: “If your journey is essential, please slow down, drive with caution, and be aware of other road users. Allow extra time for your journey. If a road has been treated by a gritter or snowplough, do not assume that the road is safe to travel. There may still be underlying snow or ice which would make the road hazardous.

“Pedestrians are advised to take extra care. Where snow has fallen, or where there is a risk of lingering ice, do not venture out unless it is absolutely necessary. Be aware of the fact that greenways and other public amenities will likely not have been treated. Remember that a simple trip/fall could give rise to the need for a hospital admission, so please take extra care.”
