Convicted Derby criminal bombarded ex with threatening Facebook messages

A convicted Derby drug dealer bombarded the mother of his children with threatening messages that he would come to her home and attack her. Derby Crown Court heard how father-of-two Omar Malik’s victim has been left with mental health issues because she is scared about “what he is capable of”.

The 33-year-old, jailed in 2021 for three years for being part of a gang which sold heroin and crack cocaine on the streets of Derby and Burton, claimed he did not use Facebook Messenger when he was arrested. Now he has to wait another few weeks behind bars to find out his fate after a judge adjourned the Littleover criminal’s sentencing so a new address for him in Bradford can be checked out.

Adjourning the case until February 19 and remanding him into custody, Recorder Mary Prior KC said: “Mr Malik, I cannot sentence you today (Thursday, January 2) because there is the possibility you may have an address out of the area and the judge that sentences you may take the view that is the best way to protect the public and assist your rehabilitation. The options are fairly stark – it is either a sentence of immediate custody or one that can be suspended.”

Steve Gosnell, prosecuting, said the defendant, of Gayton Avenue, and the Alvaston victim began a relationship in 2016 and have two children together. He said: “Up until 2024 the relationship was civil.

“However, in 2024 there was a disintegration in their relationship which culminated in this offending. In March of last year he was handed a non-molestation order at the magistrates’ court not to contact her.

“The first breach was on October 18 when police received a phone call from his ex-partner that he had contacted her but when the police went there she denied she had contacted them and was not supportive of any prosecution and made no statement.

“However, the police went back and listened again to the 999 call and retired to the address and he was found at her address hiding behind a clothes airer.”

Mr Gosnell said Malik was in court the following day and granted bail but “unfortunately” chose to “repeatedly contact” the victim by Facebook Messenger. He said: “Again she contacted the police because there were 57 messages, 39 of which were over two days.

“She ignored most of the calls but did answer some and when she did he was abusive to her and her family saying he would come to her address and assault her. He was arrested, said he did not make any calls and did not use Facebook Messenger.”

Malik pleaded guilty to two counts of breaching the non-nolestation order. He has 23 previous convictions for 35 offences including the three-year prison term handed to him at the same court in 2021 for possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

Chris Halls, mitigating, said his client has been in custody since November 8 and has the Bradford address available to him should the judge choose not to impose an immediate custodial sentence. He said: “It was borne out of good intentions to see his children.”

Mailk will be sentenced on February 19.
