Coleen Rooney ‘devastated’ after husband Wayne leaves Plymouth Argyle

Coleen Rooney is reportedly “devastated” following the dismissal of her husband Wayne from his managerial role at Plymouth Argyle, insiders have claimed. The former Manchester United and England legend was shown the door at Home Park after a string of poor results saw Argyle languishing at the bottom of the Championship standings.

During his tenure, the team secured a mere four league victories, failing to win any on the road under the 39-year-old’s guidance.

This setback marks the second time Wayne Rooney has been sacked within a year, having previously been let go by Birmingham City in January 2024. His departure did not prevent Birmingham’s subsequent relegation, despite efforts from those who followed him.

Speculation is rife that Wayne could make a comeback to television, with his previous stints as a pundit being well-received and broadcasters reportedly keen to secure his services. Amidst these rumours, it’s believed that Coleen is supportive of her husband’s potential return to football punditry.

A source close to the ‘I’m a Celebrity’ alum told The Mail: “Coleen was so keen for Wayne’s managerial career to work out,” adding, “She knows how much he wanted it and she knows how much he loves football.” They also hinted that Coleen sees football as a positive influence, keeping Wayne occupied and “out of trouble”, reports the Mirror.

Plymouth Argyle had a promising start to the season, sitting comfortably mid-table with three wins and 11 points from nine games. However, their form took a nosedive, losing nine out of the following 15 matches, which precipitated their slide down the rankings.

Kevin Nancekivell and Joe Edwards stepped up as joint caretaker managers for the first match of 2025, with Bristol City visiting Home Park. The game saw the home side come back twice to secure a draw thanks to Julio Pleguezuelo’s late equaliser.

Fans are now speculating on when Wayne Rooney might make his return to management.

After parting ways with his role, Wayne expressed his gratitude: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, in particular Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip who I shared great relationships with,” he said. “Thanks also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and who make the club such a special place, the players and fans for their efforts and support during my time as Head Coach and I wish them all the best for the future.

“To the Green Army thanks for making the games at Home Park so special, they are memories that we will share forever. I would also like to give a special mention to my coaching staff Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan and Mike Phelan for their knowledge, dedication, help and support.

“Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to look out for and take interest in their results.”
