Co-op store reopens in Derbyshire town after huge revamp

A Derbyshire Co-op store has undergone a significant revamp after reopening earlier this month. The Central Co-op petrol station and mini-supermarket in Harrison Drive, Wirksworth, has been “revitalised” with the addition of a number of upgrades, both inside and out.

Residents in the area will now be able to enjor a revamped food-to-go area, set to offer more choice and convenience, as well as an updated fresh and local produce display. It has also installed new “energy-efficient” chillers and freezers to boost sustainability and a “buzz for booze” section set to change the alcohol shopping experience.

A spokesperson for Central Co-op said: “Home to a petrol station and convenience store, the reopening of Central Co-op in Wirksworth donned a festive Christmas window display painted by a local artist. Children from Wirksworth Infant School celebrated the reopening with a tour and a cuddly fruit plushie gift.

“The store will reap the benefits of a state-of-the-art CCTV for enhanced safety and security and there will also be bike repair stations, water refill points and a car tyre air pump to support active lifestyles. We also aim to have EV chargers installed in the new year.”

The updates have been applied to three other stores in the UK: Ibstock, Leicestershire; Rickinghall, Suffolk; and Wildwood, Stafford. Simon Smith, head of format development projects and facilities at Central Co-op, said: “These upgrades are about more than just modernising our stores, they reflect our ongoing commitment to delivering the best shopping experience for our Members and customers while strengthening our connection to the local communities we serve.”

Central Co-op is one of the largest independent retail co-operative societies in the UK, with a heritage stretching back more than 180 years and interests in food, funeral, floral and property investment.
