Closure alert issued to M42 and M6 drivers ahead of two weeks of works

West Midlands drivers have been warned as HS2 works continue on the M42 and M6 link road this weekend. From January 11 to January 25, there will be overnight weekday and weekend closures of the M42 and M6 link road to allow for the works taking place on viaduct bridges for HS2.

HS2 said the work taking place across this month will mark the next phase of the link road viaduct project. The key area impacted is the M42/M6 link road, but drivers have been warned of congestion and delays in the area as a diversion route is put in place.

National Highways West Midlands said the closures are essential to allow contractors to carry out work safely. A warning from HS2 read: “Overnight weekday and weekend closures of the M42 M6 link road eastbound and westbound carriageways. Between 11 January and 24 January 2025,we will be working on the M42 M6 link Road.

“Our workforce may be on-site up to one hour before and after to setup our equipment.” Drivers were told to expect a “clearly signed diversion route.”

HS2 said the work taking place throughout January will see teams install the parapets on the East viaduct bridge and remove equipment from the previous phase of construction. These tasks will be carried out during several overnight and weekend closures.

A detailed table of every single closure that drivers can expect was published by HS2, who are carrying out the works in partnership with Balfour Beatty VINCI.

Live traffic system INRIX also had a warning in place for the whole of this weekend, which stated: “M6 link road in both directions closed, delays expected due to weekend roadworks until the early hours of Monday morning at J4A (M42 interchange).”

Any changes to the programme of works will be published by National Highways and HS2 social channels. Elsewhere on the M42, a new Birmingham Airport road opened just before Christmas after years of works. You can read more on that opening, here.
