‘Closing down sale’ signs posted in two Hull branches of fashion store Select

Fashion chain Select has posted signs advertising closing down sales in two of its stores in central and west Hull.

The retailer of women’s clothing, accessories and footwear looks to be pulling the plug on its city presence, amid a number of other reported Select shop closures elsewhere in the country. The chain first emerged onto high streets in the 1980s and up to last year was said to be operating around 100 stores nationwide, including one in Ferensway, Hull city centre, and one at St Andrew’s Retail Park, Hessle Road.

Notice of Select entering into a voluntary arrangement – a way for a company to restructure debts while still trading – was lodged with Companies House as taking effect on May 3, 2024. A new registered office address in London was filed for the company on January 9 this year.

Though there appears to be a move to close physical stores – Ipswich, Kent, Cwmbran, and London all saw Select shops close last year, according to the Mirror – Select was busy advertising its stock online over the Christmas period. The signage in the Hull shops does not give an indication of their actual closing date.

One customer who visited the Hessle Road branch last weekend said they thought closure must be soon. They told Hull Live: “Staff appeared to be removing fittings from the store, including the mannequins, that were then being loaded into a car, suggesting closure is imminent.”

The Mirror reports that Select is currently owned by Turkish entrepreneur Cafer Mahiroğlu. Select fell into administration back in 2019 blaming “tough” conditions on the high street, at the time putting 1,800 jobs and 169 stores at risk. It was later bought out of administration by Genus UK Limited.

At one time the company operated three stores in Hull, with a third operation in Holderness Road.
