A company that produced a Christmas dinner scone is offering money off after a ‘scandal’ hit the festive treat. Last year, The Cornish Company released what they say is a UK-first Christmas Dinner Scone.
The product was to replace Christmas Dinner and the stress that came with it. But after the Guardian described it as the ‘biggest scone scandal of all time’, and The Cornish Heritage Trust warned ‘to not mess with a Cornish scone’, The Cornish Company is giving customers 10 per cent off in January.
According to the Cornish Company, data suggested that almost half (39 per cent) found Christmas Dinner to be a stressful experience. But, the release of the festive scone had the Cornish up-in-arms.
“This is surely a crime,” one person said on social media, while another added: “Anyone who puts gravy on a scone needs locking up, this is surely sacrilege”.
Cathy Woolcock, head of the Cornwall Heritage Trust, which seeks to protect and preserve the region’s heritage, said: “At the Cornwall Heritage Trust, we are all about tradition. As far as we are concerned, do not mess with a Cornish scone.
“It is jam first with clotted cream on top. Cornish people are protective of their scones. A Cornishman would always enjoy a pasty over a Christmas dinner-flavoured scone.”
To apologise for the stress caused to the Cornish people, The Cornish Company has released an exclusive discount code which entitles customers to 10 per cent off all products. All people have to do is enter the code ‘Christmasdinnerscone10’ into the checkout to claim the discount.
The discount code, which can be used once per customer, will be available for 48 hours from midnight on Wednesday (January 8).
Tom Woodley, founder and managing director of hamper delivery service, The Cornish Company, said: “We have to apologise to our friends, family, customers and fellow Cornish. Despite the Christmas Dinner scone selling out in under 48 hours and the UK going wild for it, we know this was as some have said, ‘sacrilege’.
“That’s why we’re saying sorry to our Cornish customers and next time maybe we’ll keep the gravy separate…”
