There is a huge selection of events for all ages to celebrate Chinese New Year

A range of traditional, creative and colourful events are available for Liverpool’s Chinese New Year celebrations. While the Lunar New Year rings in on Wednesday, January 29, local festivities will reach their height on Sunday, February 2.

Every year Liverpool’s Chinatown comes to life with music, performances, parades and colour. Local businesses and communities host a range of events, from painting and dancing to learning more about Chinese culture.

Museums are holding traditional lion dance performances and workshops while a full programme on behalf of Liverpool City Council is just around the corner. Below are all the events happening around Liverpool for Chinese New Year 2025. We will update this list as new events are confirmed.

Liverpool’s Chinese New Year Parade

Chinatown becomes a festival of sound and confetti with a packed programme of free events for everyone to enjoy for Chinese New Year. The Lion, Dragon and Unicorn parade will once again return for a spectacle performance on a number of streets nearby the city’s Chinatown area.

Chinese Lantern Painting

Prepare some decor for the Chinese New Year by painting onto a rice paper lantern using traditional Chinese painting materials. The event is organised by Floating Art Workshop.

Paint and Sip

Asian-fusion restaurant Chamber 36 is inviting guests to grab a drink, a brush, and paint to their heart’s desire in a collaboration with Pinot & Picasso. Guests will be welcomed with a special cocktail to kick off the festivities, while our artists guide you to painting mastery. Enjoy a fun and creative evening with friends in a cosy, cultural setting.

Chinese New Year Crafts

Pop in and make something special to celebrate the New Year as we enter the Year of the Snake, in this free craft activity for all the family to enjoy. ‘Join in and make’ sessions take place between 11am and 12pm and also between 1pm and 4pm.

Lunar New Year at the Lady Lever Art Gallery

Join in with the Lady Lever Art Gallery’s annual celebration of our astonishing Chinese collections and links to Wirral’s Chinese community. Find out all about the lunar new year and the legend of the Zodiac Race with Billy Hui, presenter of BBC Merseyside’s Orient Express.

Watch beautiful dances in traditional dress from the Wirral Chinese Cultural Association dance group. Make a Chinese New Year card to wish happiness and prosperity to your friends and family for the new year and join in with our crafts for the Year for the Snake.

Lion Dance Workshop

Join the team as they explain the history and tradition of the Chinese lion while children find out how to work the life size puppets in pairs, learn the rhythm of the traditional lion dance drum and the special lion dance steps to bring the lions to life.

Lion Dance Performance

Expect a celebration of Liverpool’s Chinese heritage with Hung Gar Kung Fu School as they return to the museum to perform the fabulous Lion dance for the Year of the Snake.
