Chester’s Paralympic stars among Cheshire stalwarts named in New Year Honours

Paralympic stars Hannah Cockroft and Amy Truesdale – who both won gold for Britain at the 2024 Paris Games – have been recognised in His Majesty The King’s New Year Honours List.

Wheelchair racer Hannah, who lives in Elton, has been awarded a CBE for services to athletics. The 32-year-old was victorious in both the T34 100m and 800m events during the summer – taking her total Paralympic goal medal haul to nine.

Chester taekwondo star Amy Truesdale could not contain her joy when she made history with Paralympic gold in the summer. The 35-year-old dominated the final of the women’s +65kg category with the victory sealing ParalympicsGB’s first-ever gold in the sport.

She also became the maiden fighter to hold Paralympic, World and European titles concurrently. “It’s the last medal I needed to complete my career,” she said after her win. Amy has been awarded an MBE for services to taekwondo.

Other Cheshire residents recognised in the New Year Honours included education and business stalwarts, charity champions and youth workers. A police officer and a firefighter also made the list.
