The Cherry Tomato Bridge party may soon be over as Dublin City Council has confirmed they will be “cleaning and inspecting the site daily”.
The landmark at 4 Richmond Rd, Drumcondra went viral after a few cherry tomatoes mysteriously appeared on Drumcondra Bridge and were frozen during the cold spell last week. With the help of TikTok and other social media posts, hype around the bridge mounted during the weekend with the phenomenon even making international headlines.
The bridge has been labelled as a “shrine” and “historical landmark” on Google Maps and has attracted five-star reviews. The person who first placed cherry tomatoes at the site is still unknown but drovers of locals and tourists have visited the bridge in recent days to leave cherry tomatoes, bottles of ketchup, tins of tomatoes, framed photographs and other tributes.
However, it seems that the fun may soon be over with Dublin City Council confirming they will be cleaning the site daily and urging the public not to leave food on the bridge.
A spokeswoman for Dublin City Council told Dublin Live: “Dublin City Council are aware of food being presented on Drumcondra bridge and will be cleaning and inspecting the site daily. It is asked that food is not discarded and wasted in this manner.”

On Monday, Dublin Live visited the bridge to speak to some of the visitors who were enjoying the city’s latest attraction. One told us: “I’m here to worship it. It’s meant to be worshipped, I feel that’s what it’s calling me to do.”
Another said: “It’s interactive as well. As you can see there is ketchup on the wall and people are painting and writing their names. It’s very interactive.”
