She has organised parties for some of the world’s biggest stars and even royalty. Now celebrity event specialist Liz Taylor has given her top tips for hosting like an A-lister – without the need for a superstar budget.
Liz, from Bowdon, has famously planned weddings and parties for Premier League footallers, TV stars and singers with her company Taylor Lynn Corporation.
She says the key to getting the A list look without the spend all lies in the presentation and atmosphere. With many people planning New Year’s Eve parties for friends this week, Liz says this is how to make sure your event goes with a bang.
We quizzed Liz on her top tips for party organising that you can do on a limited budget, or even better, by simply maximising what you’ve already got at home. Here’s her top tips for party success.
Create a Stunning Arrival

Liz says: “First impressions matter, especially when hosting a party. Your entrance sets the tone for the evening so it’s worth investing a little effort to make it spectacular.”
She suggests a simple yet effective way is by using fairy lights and reusable lighting chains. “Not only are these affordable, but they’re also versatile and can be reused for multiple occasions, making them an eco-friendly and budget-friendly option. Win-win!”
Liz says start by turning off all your house lights to create a blank canvas, then experiment with lighting placement to craft a warm, inviting glow. Layer your lighting strategically: use up-lighting to draw attention to focal points like doorways, plants, or feature walls, instantly adding drama and elegance. Drape fairy lights across tables, ceilings, or along banisters to create a magical, twinkling effect.
She adds: “Don’t forget outdoors, either. Line pathways or garden areas with light chains to guide guests and enhance the ambiance.”
Get creative with drinks
Liz says: “When it comes to drinks, presentation is everything. By thinking outside the box, you can turn even simple beverages into show-stopping moments your guests will talk about long after the party’s over.”
She has shared her fun, budget-friendly, and sustainable ideas to inspire your drink station:
- Mini Glass Milk Bottles: Fill these with cocktails, mocktails, or even sparkling water, and add a fancy straw – there are some amazing reusable straws around to choose from, think stainless steel or personalised ceramic!
- Repurposed Soup Tins: Don’t toss those empty soup tins! Remove the labels, give them a good clean, and decorate them with custom designs or colourful paper. This DIY approach is a fantastic way to involve the family in party prep and adds a quirky, personalised touch.
- Vintage Teacups and Teapots: Add a whimsical, Alice-in-Wonderland charm by serving sparkling wine, Prosecco, or even signature cocktails in teacups and teapots.
- Kir Royale with a Twist: For a timeless yet elegant option, serve Prosecco with a splash of crème de cassis. This simple combination creates the classic Kir Royale and will always add a touch of sophistication to any drink’s menu. Place flutes in the fridge or freezer before serving and finish with a fresh blackberry on a vintage cocktail stick and a twist of lemon peel. Or make it look extra special by floating some edible flowers like violets or pansies on the surface.
Set the scene with music

Music transforms the atmosphere of your party, so make it a priority, says Liz. She says: “With apps like Spotify or similar, you can create playlists tailored to your guests. You can even take requests in advance or on the night to ensure a crowd-pleasing selection.
“Start with soft jazz or acoustic tracks during arrivals to establish a relaxed and welcoming vibe, and gradually transition to upbeat tunes as the night progresses, encouraging guests to hit the dance floor.”
Simplify the Food
Liz says don’t stress about spending a fortune on food or spending endless hours in the kitchen. She says: “Supermarkets like Lidl and Asda offer fantastic options for party platters and pre-prepared dishes that are both affordable and delicious. With a little creativity, these can be beautifully arranged on serving platters to look just as impressive as any high-end catering.
“Add garnishes like fresh herbs, edible flowers, or a sprinkle of pomegranate seeds to elevate the presentation effortlessly.
“For a fun, crowd-pleasing twist, consider ordering from a local fish and chip shop (if you’ve got a good one!) to be delivered later in the evening (around 10 p.m.). It’s a light-hearted break and an affordable way to keep guests happy.”
Final Thoughts
Liz says: “Celebrity-style parties are about the experience, not the expense.
“With a focus on creative presentation, thoughtful atmosphere, and clever budgeting, you can host an unforgettable event that feels effortlessly glamorous. So, grab your fairy lights, cue the music, and let the celebrations begin!”
