Cause of Shildon shop fire revealed after firefighters deal with County Durham blaze

The cause of a shop fire in Shildon has been revealed, after firefighters spent hours tackling the County Durham blaze.

The County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) was alerted to the fire on Church Street at 10.12am on Monday.

CDDFRS deployed a total of five fire engines from stations in Bishop Auckland, Newton Aycliffe, Darlington and Spennymoor, as well as an aerial ladder platform (ALP) from Durham. The ALP was used by firefighters to extinguish the fire, and the last firefighter left the scene just after 4pm.

The fire service has confirmed that the cause of the fire was accidental, so an investigation will not take place. Thankfully, nobody was injured, despite the fire breaking out on the populated County Durham high street.

A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) spokesperson said: “We were called to a fire at a shop on Church Street in Shildon at 10.12am yesterday (Monday, January 13).

“We immediately deployed firefighters to the area with a total of five fire engines from Bishop Auckland, Newton Aycliffe, Darlington and Spennymoor in attendance, along with one aerial ladder platform (ALP) from Durham. Firefighters used the ALP to extinguish the fire, with the last engine leaving the scene at 4.02pm.

“The cause of the fire was accidental and there is no requirement for an investigation. No one was injured in the incident. We would like to thank the public for their co-operation and support during this incident.”
