Cardiff’s top restaurants are set to compete against each other in the “ultimate” Scotch egg challenge, and the public will be the ones that get to decide which one is the best. On Instagram, Mesen restaurant which is based in the Rhiwbina area of Cardiff, announced there would be a brand new culinary competition on the scene – Cardiff Scotch Egg Championship.
The restaurants that would be competing in this tasty test will be Asador 44, Fire & Flank, Heaneys, Jackson’s, La Pantera, Matsudai Ramen, Nighthawks and Tidy Kitchen. The city’s first ever Scotch egg competition will take place at Mesen at 6pm on Wednesday evening, January 22, where diners can have a drink and sample the Scotch eggs. In a post shared on Instagram on Friday, January 3, Mesen’s video promoting the competition said: “Cardiff is home to some of the country’s best chefs. Professional kitchens in the city have been pushing culinary boundaries and providing first class food. Restaurants have won national awards and chefs have received critical acclaim.
“However none of the plaudits will compare to the real challenge that lies ahead of them. Brace yourselves for the ultimate challenge… Cardiff Scotch Egg Championship”. The video continued: “Mesen’s calling on you to be the judge”.
To be within the chance of judging the scotch eggs, you will have to book. According to Mesen, bookings will open on Wednesday, January 8, via their website. Speaking to WalesOnline ahead of the competition, Rhys Williams the owner of Mesen said he decided to launch the competition as it was “something that was accessible to everyone” and ultimately to “champion the Cardiff food scene”.
Mr Williams said: “There’s never a chance to get all the kitchens together, everyone is too busy working, so initially this was a thing to get kitchens together and to get talking to one and other in a light hearted conversation with a light hearted competition.”
When asked why Mesen had decided to host a competition focusing on Scotch eggs, he said: “We thought it was something that all the chefs could get their teeth into, but that each and every one is different so that it reflects their kitchen and says something about their background. Some may think that a Scotch egg wouldn’t fit these restaurants’ briefs, but they are all super excited to get involved.”
As Mr Williams explained, there will be a maximum of 40 guests, with every restaurant kitchen competing the competition, preparing 10 Scotch eggs each. While eight restaurants will be competing in the culinary test, Mesen will be hosting the event.
