Car skids around ‘ice rink’ Stoke road with four crashes in two years

Families are demanding council action after four crashes on an ‘ice-rink’ road in two years. Fletcher Road, in Stoke, is once again resembling a sheet of ice during the current big freeze.

It comes as CCTV has been released of a car skidding around a Fletcher Road bend earlier this week. The worst-hit area is the bend at the junction of the pedestrian walkway near the Dunelm warehouse.

Now residents want Stoke-on-Trent City Council to install a grit bin as well as wider safety measures on the road.

Resident Michael Habtemarian, aged 50, said: “Every time it snows they crash into me. They have crashed into my car this week. You need a hump, you need something here, maybe salt. They’ve hit the wall and it was destroyed, they could hit the house. The important thing is the hump because they come around speeding.”

Neighbour Robbie Dean added: “The road always seems to be wet and when it gets cold it’s basically like an ice rink. Something needs to be done about it because I know there have been a lot of near-misses in the past and all it takes is one person to be in the wrong spot.”

StokeonTrentLive has approached Stoke-on-Trent City Council for a statement regarding the residents’ concerns.
