There’s nothing more frustrating than having to brave the icy conditions early in the morning just to start your car. But, we’ve got a quick defrosting trick that will save you heaps of time.
We gave it a go and it worked like a charm. All you need are three simple ingredients that you can prepare ahead of time.
While others might be struggling with scraping ice off their windscreens or risking damage with boiling water, you’ll have this problem sorted. You’ll need an empty spray bottle – you can buy a new one or repurpose an old cleaning spray bottle.
The key ingredients are surgical spirits (Ireland’s version of rubbing alcohol) and water. Mix 2/3 surgical spirit with 1/3 water in your bottle and give it a good shake until it’s well mixed.
This is a brilliant solution as you can prepare it in advance and there’s no need for constant refills. When you need it, simply aim at your windscreen and spray.
The ice and frost will vanish instantly. It’s also handy if your door handles are frozen shut.
The science behind this is clever – alcohol has a very low freezing point, allowing it to quickly break up the ice. Keep it in your home or car so you’re always prepared, thanks to the alcohol in the surgical spirit.

While the freezing point of alcohol is a chilly -114.1 degrees, it’s safe to say that Ireland will never reach such frosty temperatures. We recently put the viral plastic bag trick to the test and were pleasantly surprised by the results.
All you need for this simple hack is a plastic bag and some lukewarm water. Firstly, ensure your bag is hole-free.
Next, fill it with lukewarm water and secure it with a knot at the top. Finally, take your filled bag to your car and gently slide it across your windscreen to effortlessly remove any ice or frost.
