A Peterborough nursery has been rated ‘requires improvement’ by Ofsted, in a report that described teaching skills as being “not of a high standard”. According to the inspectorate, the effectiveness of Rise and Shine Day Nursery at Jack Hunt School on Ledbury Road dropped from ‘good’ in 2019 to ‘requires improvement’ in December 2024.
Ofsted’s most recent report was published on December 31, 2024, after an inspection on December 2. It said: “The overall learning opportunities that children receive during their time at the nursery are not yet good and this contributes to children’s low engagement levels.
“Furthermore, the support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is not sufficient to help achieve the best possible outcomes.”
On the subject of teaching skills, the report concludes: “The management team recognises when staff’s teaching skills are not of a high standard. That said, they do not always implement further training or supervision that is effective in teaching staff how to provide high-quality interactions with children.
“This has an impact on the overall quality of education that is provided at the nursery.”
Rise and Shine Day Nursery was described as requiring improvement in every category assessed: education quality; behaviour and attitudes; personal development; and leadership and management.
However, inspectors praised the “caring and compassionate” nature of staff members, the prioritisation of emotional development, and the fact that “children are happy” at the nursery. Speech and language skills are supported when members of staff talk to children, and maths is “embedded throughout the provision for older children”, according to Ofsted.
A spokesperson for Rise and Shine Day Nursery declined to comment on the most recent Ofsted rating and report.
