Cambs Hindu group commemorates big milestone at King’s College event celebrating ‘one community’

A Hindu organisation that was set up in the new town of Northstowe three years ago celebrated its anniversary with an afternoon of prayer and dance at King’s College in Cambridge on Saturday (January 4). Hindu Samaj Northstowe (HSN) was founded by a group of Hindu families in Northstowe and neighbouring areas in 2021, four years after the first residents moved into the town.

The theme of Saturday’s event was ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, a Sanskrit phrase that can be translated as ‘one community; one family’. The celebration featured a shloka, a Sanskrit recital, by children from HSN’s Dharma Club, who highlighted the values of devotion and learning passed on to them by the club.

Natyaveda School of Dance performed mesmerising pieces in the Indian classical dance form, Bharatanatyam. The event also celebrated the collective efforts of the Northstowe community, through the recognition of individuals and groups who have contributed to the growth of HSN since 2021 – including Over Day Centre and community interest company Northstowe Arts.

HSN trustee Aparna Nigam-Saxena said: “HSN’s journey is a testament to the power of collective effort and shared values. Together, we will continue to nurture our traditions and build a thriving future.”

Dan Lentell, South Cambridgeshire District councillor for Over and Willingham, was the chief guest. He commended HSN for its contributions to unity and cultural preservation.
