Cambridgeshire hotel evacuated as fire sees road closed

A Cambridgeshire hotel was evacuated due to a fire on Monday (December 30). Firefighters were called to a fire at Old Bridge Hotel on High Street, Huntingdon, at 3.58pm.

Guests and staff were evacuated from the hotel before firefighters arrived from Huntingdon and Cambridge. The fire involved the chimney at the hotel. The road was closed while emergency services attended.

Crews extinguished the fire using hose reels and chimney rods, plus the turntable ladder aerial appliance to tackle the fire from above. They returned to their stations by 6.15pm.

A fire service spokesperson said: “Please ensure that you get your chimney swept and brickwork inspected regularly, at least once a year. The debris buildup in the flue can be set alight when heating a property, which could cause a significant fire.

“Regular chimney maintenance will help prevent this from happening.”
