Cambridgeshire criminals jailed in December include man who filmed himself raping a woman

Cambridgeshire criminals who were jailed in December included paedophiles, rapists, and drug dealers. Other crimes which saw criminals put behind bars included breaching a deportation order, burglary, and fraud.

The longest sentence handed down at a court in Cambridgeshire was 22 years. It was handed to Kevin Calderbank, who sexually abused two young girls more than 30 years ago, with his crimes coming to light in 2020 after the victims contacted the police.

We’ve put together a list of some of the worst criminals jailed in Cambridgeshire this month. Read on for more information about their crimes and sentences.

Darrell Gowler

Rogue trader Gowler targeted elderly victims and scammed then out of hundreds of pounds. He targeted elderly people in Wisbech, offering to carry out work at their homes but charging disproportionate amounts and demanding payment upfront before failing to return to carry out the work.

On two occasions, he followed victims into their homes and stole purses and wallets. Gowler was sentenced to four years in prison at Peterborough Crown Court on December 2 after pleading guilty to two counts of dwelling burglary and two counts of fraud.

Audrius Verkauskas

Verkauskas, 44, signed a deportation order in March 2015 and was first removed from the country in November 2015 but has repeatedly returned to Britain since. He was kicked out again in February 2019, June 2021, May 2022, and August 2023.

He was arrested for unrelated matters in Peterborough in April this year and found to be in breach of the deportation order. On December 2, Verkauskas was jailed for two years at Peterborough Crown Court after he pleaded guilty to knowingly entering the UK in breach of a deportation order. He will be deported for a sixth time after serving his sentence.

Kevin Calderbank

Calderbank sexually abused two young girls in Peterborough more than 30 years ago – between 1985 and 1989. The victims reported the abuse in 2020.

Calderbank was sentenced to 22 years in prison on December 3 at Cambridge Crown Court after being found guilty of seven counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14. He was also placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and given a sexual harm prevention order.

Tabarik Hussain

Hussain sexually assaulted a child and filmed himself raping a woman while she was asleep and unable to give consent. He had previously secretly filmed himself having consensual sex with the woman in Peterborough, who he had met on a dating site.

The crimes came to light after he was arrested for sexually assaulting a child in 2023. He had sent sexual messages to the child, including images of his penis, and later sexually assaulted her twice at her home.

Hussain admitted engaging in sexual communications with a child, but denied two counts of rape, three of voyeurism, two of assaulting a girl under 13 by touching, making indecent photographs of a child and harassment. At two separate trials in April and November at Peterborough Crown Court he was found guilty on all counts, and he was jailed for 18 years on December 6.

Nabil Aziz

London-based Aziz ran a drugs operation dealing cocaine, heroin, and cannabis in Cambridge as part of the ‘Bingo’ drugs line. A joint operation between Cambridgeshire Constabulary and the Metropolitan Police revealed he was dealing across the city between September 2023 and February 2024.

Aziz was sentenced to seven years in prison at Peterborough Crown Court on December 10. He was found guilty of being concerned in the supply of heroin and cocaine at a trial in November and pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of cannabis.

Christopher Woods

‘Despicable’ paedophile Woods walked into a young girl’s home and sexually assaulted her after being captured on CCTV trying door handles in Sawtry. He had been carrying a pint glass, which he left in the garden of the house – fingerprints found on the glass led to Woods being arrested.

Woods was found guilty of assaulting a girl under 13 by touching and breaching an existing Sexual Harm Prevention Order after a trial at Peterborough Crown Court in November. He was jailed for four years and six months at the same court on December 11.

Wayne Freeman

Freeman sexually abused two children over a 17-year period between 2006 and 2023. DC Annette Renwick said: “The devastation this abuse has caused them and the impact on their wider families is immense.”

He was charged and later found guilty of five counts of assaulting a girl under 13 by touching, two counts of assaulting a girl under 13 by penetration and two counts of sexual assault on a female. On December 17 at Peterborough Crown Court, Freeman, of Somers Court, Wisbech, was jailed for ten years.

Peter Swan

Swan paid women in the Philippines for livestreams or videos of children being sexually exploited. He had almost 3,000 indecent images of children in his possession when his laptops and phone were seized.

He pleaded guilty to three counts of arranging/facilitating the sexual exploitation of a child under 13 and one count of arranging/facilitating the sexual exploitation of a child between 13 and 17. He was jailed for 16 years at Peterborough Crown Court on December 18.

Noel Brome-Hinds

Brome-Hinds raped one girl and sexually assaulted two others, with the abuse starting in the 1970s and continuing until the 1990s. One victim described how her first memory of being abused was from when she was a toddler, and it took place more than 50 times overall.

He was sentenced to 13 years in prison at Peterborough Crown Court on December 23, after being found guilty in November to 13 counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 14; five counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 16; and one count of raping a female aged 16 or over.
