Burnley bid for Plymouth Argyle FA Cup hero Morgan Whittaker

Multiple media reports that Plymouth Argyle have received a bid from Championship rivals Burnley for their star attacker Morgan Whittaker are correct.

However, Plymouth Live also understands the offer from Burnley is nowhere near to the valuation that Argyle have for the talented 24-year-old.

A series of reports emerged on Sunday night about Burnley making an official bid for Whittaker, first from Football Insider’s transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke and then renowned Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano as well as Sky Sports News.

They came a little over 24 hours after Whittaker hit the national headlines by scoring a superb late winning goal as Argyle caused a huge FA Cup upset by beating Premier League club Brentford 1-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Their reward for that win is a fourth round tie against Premier League leaders Liverpool at Home Park, which will be played over the weekend of February 8/9.

Burnley, who are second in the Championship table a point behind table-topping Leeds United, made a number of late offers for Whittaker at the end of the summer transfer window but they were not accepted by Argyle.

Given their interest then, it is no surprise the Clarets have returned with another bid for Whittaker, who is under contract to the Pilgrims until the summer of 2027 after joining them from Swansea City for a then club record fee of £1 million in July 2023.

Being involved in speculation during a transfer window might unsettle some players but it has become normal for Whittaker. When he was recalled from his initial successful loan spell at Argyle by Swansea in January 2023 there was a talk of talk about him being sold to Scottish Premiership side Rangers but that did not materialise.

Whittaker has been consistently linked with Rangers since then, but when he left Swansea in the summer of 2023 it was Argyle he joined. Then last January, after he emerged as one of the best players in the Championship, he was the subject of an £8.5 million bid from Italian Serie A side Lazio, which was rejected.

The 2024 summer transfer window saw more speculation about Whittaker, culminating in Burnley’s late move for him, but again he stayed put at Home Park.
