The ever-popular free ‘Old Folks Show’ in Bridgwater will be debuting early this year, with audiences urged to get their tickets fast to “avoid disappointment”. The show – which will play from Thursday, February 27 to Saturday, March 1 – has been moved forward due to upcoming repairs on Bridgwater Town Hall where the show is staged.
The ‘Old Folks Home’ is often thought of as a thank you to the town’s older citizens who help keep the spirit of Bridgwater Carnival alive. The show is organised by Bridgwater Carnival supporter Wayne Anker with support from Bridgwater Gangs and Features, a organisation for the town’s carnival clubs.
Arthur Leigh, President of Bridgwater Gangs and Features, said: “Every year these tickets are highly sought after, and we would strongly encourage anyone who wants to attend, to collect their ticket [ASAP] to avoid disappointment, especially as we have less seating this year.
“There is absolutely no charge for the tickets, and we would like for those who are over 60 to come along and enjoy an evening with the Bridgwater Gangs and Features carnival clubs, local dance troupes and front of curtain acts”.
Bridgwater Carnival is a point of pride for the town and a core part of its local character. Last November, Gremlins CC were crowned the winners of the 2024 procession with their ‘Beatlemania’-inspired cart. Masqueraders CC with Step Right Up were announced as the Usher Cup winners in the Open Feature class, with Harlequin CC and Pinball, Globe CC and Driven by Precision, and Westonzoyland CC and Sawmill rounding out the top four.
The Hardy Spicer and Blake Cup for best open tableau was awarded to Brunel by Huckyduck CC. Newmarket CC with Tour de Somerset won the Comic class, while Birds of Paradise from Rubalo JCC won the Juvenile class.
Tickets for this year’s Old Folks Show will be available to collect from the Carnival Centre, High Street, Bridgwater, on Friday January 17 between 10am and 12 noon. Any remaining tickets can be collected from the Carnival Centre during normal opening hours (Monday to Friday, 9am to 1pm).
When collecting tickets, please let the ticket officer know if you have any accessibility needs.
