Breaking – police arrest two in armed operation as part of Birmingham street sealed off

Two people were arrested in a Birmingham street tonight as armed officers were involved in an operation which saw part of a city street sealed off. West Midlands Police said the pair were held on suspicion of weapons offences and enquiries continued.

The late-night update came after a witness earlier spoke of seeing Sherlock Street in Highgate closed off with armed officers “parked all over the road” at around 7pm today, Wednesday, January 15. Residents were only being allowed to pass through upon production of ID, she said.

The full details of the arrests were not known but the West Midlands force said it was part of an ongoing investigation.

The witness told BirminghamLive marked police cars were blocking the road between Hope Street and Gooch Street before the 999 presence was scaled back. An area was also taped off.

A resident said: “The whole of Sherlock Street was closed off by police and armed police parked all over the road. We had to abandon the car and walk home but was only let through with proof of ID.”

Sherlock Street runs from Digbeth through to Highgate and is situated close to Bristol Street and Belgrave Middleway.
