Body found on Somerset beach as unexplained death creates a mystery for investigators

The body of a man has been found on a beach in Somerset. Coastguard and RNLI crews were called to the scene between Minehead and Highbridge around 11.50am on Saturday, December 28, 2024.

Emergency services attended Lilstock Beach after a member of the public reported finding a body. The body of a man was recovered from the scene, Avon and Somerset Police said.

The death is currently being treated as unexplained and police are investigating. Enquiries are ongoing to identify the man, who is believed to be aged between 40 and 60 when he died. A post-mortem examination will take place ahead of an inquest to look into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: “At 11.53am on Saturday 28 December, we were called to Lilstock Beach following the discovery of a body by a member of the public.

“Officers attended, along with emergency service colleagues, and the body of a man was recovered from the beach. The death is currently being treated as unexplained, pending the outcome of a forensic post-mortem examination.

“Enquiries are ongoing to identify the man, who is believed to be aged between 40 and 60, and inform their next of kin.”
