Black ice warning issued after driver injured in Leicestershire crash

A warning has been issued to drivers after black ice left one motorist injured in a Leicestershire crash. Fire crews have urged people to reduce their speed to not fall foul of black ice.

The incident happened at around 8am today (Wednesday, January 8) when a car lost control on black ice in Whitwick’s Swannymote Road, near Coalville. Images from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) at the scene show the vehicle on its side following the crash.

LFRS said crews from its Coalville and Loughborough stations were deployed to the incident. A spokesperson said teams “released” the driver who had become trapped inside the vehicle, while Leicestershire Police confirmed the driver had suffered “minor injuries” in the crash.

LFRS has now issued a warning to drivers in the wake of the collision. It has warned that driving in icy conditions is “dangerous” and extra care should be taken.

With the weather remaining cold and icy for the coming days, the service has issued five key tips to prevent others falling foul of black ice. It said:

  • Slow down – Reduce your speed and leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front
  • Gentle movements – Brake, accelerate, and steer smoothly to avoid skidding
  • Check your tires – Ensure they have good tread and are properly inflated
  • Clear visibility – Fully defrost windows and clear all ice/snow before driving
  • Plan ahead – Allow extra time for your journey and stick to main roads, which are more likely to be gritted
