Birmingham tip fully reopens after fire in rubbish pit

A household waste and recycling centre is to fully reopen today following a fire. A section of the tip in Tyseley was closed yesterday, Tuesday, January 14 after a blaze broke out at around 9.45am.

Around half-a-dozen crews were involved in tackling the fire which involved an indoor rubbish pit measuring around 15m x 15m in size. Nobody was hurt and everyone at the site was accounted for.

The incident did not affect household waste collections and was fully reopened today.

Coun Majid Mahmood said: “A small fire occurred at the Tyseley Energy from Waste facility. Emergency services were promptly on-site and successfully extinguished the fire. The facility will open again tomorrow.

“In the meantime, all waste will be redirected to the local waste transfer station. This does not affect resident’s waste collections.”

West Midlands Fire Service said on Tuesday: “Firefighters have made good progress extinguishing the fire using two hoses. A water cannon housed at the site has also been in use, as has a crane system, that is moving the affected waste from the pit to the incinerator after visibility significantly improved.

“There have been no casualties or injuries and everyone has been accounted for. Normal waste processing continues as firefighters work to bring this incident to a conclusion.”
