Beloved cafe announces it is closing for good after more than six years

A popular cafe near the Devon border has announced it is closing after six and a half years due to its lease ending. In a post to social media, the owners, Deborah and Mervyn Ough, stated that they made the decision to retire.

Despite their “lifelong dream” of owning a cafe being accomplished with The Red Chair Cafe in Launceston, the couple expressed sadness at missing their customers but are appreciative of their customers’ support.

They said: “The Red Chair Cafe will close it’s doors as a cafe on Saturday, December 28.”

“After six-and-a-half years 1,480 days of being open, we are almost at the end of our lease. Running our own cafe was a lifelong ambition for the both of us.”

“Thank you to all who have made our time in Launceston enjoyable. We will miss all our customers, but the time has come to retire. If you can not make it this week, we will be on site for a few hours each day next week serving drinks and selling off equipment, furniture, artwork etc.”, reports Cornwall Live.

Fans are saddened by the news and have already sent good luck messages to Deborah and Mervyn on social media. One customer shared, “You will be unbelievably missed – you are always so cheerful and helpful, and I’ll miss the gluten-free goodies so very much – best wishes for a wonderful retirement.”

One person expressed their gratitude, saying: “Good luck for the future in 2025 we thank you for what you did for the town.”

Another well-wisher penned: “Wishing you all the very best for your retirement! Thank you for providing such a wonderful cafe with gorgeous food. I particularly appreciated the gluten-free! “.

Another individual shared: “Best wishes to you and Deborah for your retirement. You will both be greatly missed in Lanson.” A different person wrote: “Happy retirement, your lovely cafe will be sadly missed.”
