BBC weatherman Paul Hudson ‘so excited’ as his new council gritter name is revealed

BBC weatherman Paul Hudson has been delivering news of snowy and icy conditions in the past few days, sharing shots of his own very wintry-looking neighbourhood with followers.

Now the popular meteorologist has posted another message, sharing his excitement about a new gritting lorry that could come in very useful, given the forecast, and it has been named just for him. It was announced just before Christmas that Paul was to have a Lincolnshire County Council gritter named in his honour.

Viewers responded with suggestions, but the gritter’s title had been a closely-guarded secret until today. Paul posted on X a picture of himself standing in front of … Snowfall Hudson.

He said: “So excited to get my own gritter. Thanks so much to Lincolnshire County Council.”

Followers were quick to respond, with one saying: “Awesome! Now can you drive it to my street please.”

Another follower on X said: “Well deserved finally now you need to track it.” One person commented: “Aww ace pic Paul look forward to seeing it on Look North tonight.”

When BBC Look North newscaster Peter Levy first told Paul during a bulletin he was to get a gritter named after him, the weatherman said: “It’s the best Christmas present ever. Oh, honestly, it’s a weather man’s dream.”

Peter said in his 30 years of knowing Paul, he had never seen him so excited. It had been cause for banter between the two that Peter had an East Riding Council gritter, Sleeter Levy, named after him in 2023.

Snowfall Hudson was listed among the top contenders for the lorry title, along with Paulthegritterman and Hudson’s Thawcast. Other suggestions included Squall Hudson and Rock Salt Hudson.

Paul had earlier posted snow pictures from the Roundhay area of Leeds where he lives, enjoying the scenes with his young daughter, Anya, while his rescue dog Dave slept on the sofa, apparently not moved by the sight of snow and “unimpressed”, Paul said. He also marked out the local gritters for doing a “good job” in the area.
