BBC The Traitors viewers perplexed as contestant adopts ‘bizarre’ Welsh accent strategy | Cornwall Live

The Traitors made a dramatic comeback on Wednesday night (January 1), delivering a series of unforeseen twists that kept viewers perched on the edge of their seats and left them eager for more.

With 25 new contestants ready to enter the fray, the show took an unpredictable turn as three hopefuls were eliminated before even setting foot inside the famed castle.

In a surprising development, this reduced the competition to 22 men and women, who had the opportunity to get to know one another before the roundtable where host Claudia Winkleman would appoint her trio of Traitors.

Charlotte from London, one of the competitors, disclosed her strategy of pretending to be Welsh going as far as adopting a fake accent. However, she was caught off-guard when one of her initial encounters was with a real Welsh person, Elen, a translator from Cardiff.

To the camera, she confessed: “I thought, in the past, there’s only been one person from Wales, but this year, Claudia’s decided to bring two of us here which is so nice.”

She then disclosed: “Well actually, it’s a bit of a spanner in the works because I’m not actually from Wales.”

As the 32-year-old Business Director abandoned her faux Welsh tone, she divulged: “I’m from London where I am born and bred. I’ve been putting on a Welsh accent because my mum is from Wales.”

She justified her tactic by saying: “It’s one of the most trust-worthy accents so in a game where we need people to trust each other, I need an accent that people can trust.”

Upon watching the episode, home audiences were left scratching their heads as to why Charlotte decided to fake her accent, particularly as she wasn’t picked as one of the Traitors, reports Wales Online.

Confounded viewers flocked to Reddit to share their thoughts. One puzzled fan posted: “Pretending to be Welsh is one of the most bizarre game tactics even with the ‘most trusted accent’ thing.”

Amidst the confusion, a viewer couldn’t help but make light of the situation: “Can’t get over how stupid this pretending to be Welsh thing is. Literally no benefit, will just show you’re a liar.” Another person noted: “Pretending to be Welsh and immediately meeting a Welsh speaker is hilarious.”

Additional comments surfaced, with someone voicing their amusement: “Right. So pretending to be Welsh is… the most unnecessarily extra thing I’ve ever heard.”

However, some saw merit in Charlotte’s ploy, as one observer conveyed a different angle: “Pretending to be Welsh with a Welsh speaking translator on the show is a brilliant setup.”

While yet another chimed in, hinting at the bigger picture: “Fake Welsh accents, hidden vicars, female conclaves and the Psycho plot twist, the UK Traitors is back.”

The Traitors continues tonight at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
