Balmoral Castle tour tickets sell out for second year running despite 10% price hike

Tickets to get a glimpse into the Royal Family’s private home in Balmoral have sold out for a second year running. Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, was opened up to the public last year by King Charles.

Members of the public were able to see inside of the castle for the first time in its 170-year history. Tickets running from April 1 to August 10 were snapped up within a few days of going on sale last week, despite a price increase..

Prices for tours to see inside the royal castle had increased 10% from £100 to £110 or for a tour and afternoon tea fans had to pay out £170 instead of £150 the previous year, a hike of 13%.

The Scottish castle has been a holiday home for the Royal Family for decades. The tours will take place before the King and Queen arrive at the castle for their annual break at the Scottish residence.

But, members of the public are still able to purchase general admission tickets to explore the exhibitions, gardens and grounds. Advertising the tickets for the Royal’s Highland escape, Balmoral Castle, wrote: “Visitors this summer will be able to see the exciting changes HM the King has made to the gardens, including the Thistle maze, Celtic maze garden and extensive new planting of trees, shrubs and topiary throughout.

“In 2025 the exhibition in the Ballroom continues the garden theme, outlining the history of Balmoral Castle’s gardens over the last 170 years and you will learn about some of the plans of King Charles III for the future.”

It was acquired by the Royal Family in 1852, when Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert bought it. Previously visitors were able to only see the castle grounds and ballroom until its completion in 1855.

The tour promises to transport guests from the Victorian era to the present day as they are promised “a historical journey through several of the beautiful rooms within Balmoral Castle”.

Queen Elizabeth, died at Balmoral aged 96 in September 2022 after reigning for 70 years. Balmoral Castle said on social media: “Thank you to everyone who has booked their tickets.”
