Australian tourist turns Edinburgh Hogmanay misery into memorable experience

An Australian couple celebrated their in Edinburgh after travelling over 10,000 miles to attend Hogmanay in the capital.

Kaleb Bowering popped the question atop Calton Hill on Friday, January 3 to his surprised partner Kaitlin.

The pair travelled to Edinburgh in December for the world famous Hogmanay festival and were disappointed when events began to get cancelled.

Hailing from Adelaide in South Australia, Kaleb told Edinburgh Live that he and Kaitlin were “very upset” with the cancellations.

He said: “After receiving a fine for our carpark and then getting the news of the Hogmanay being cancelled, we were very upset.

“It had taken a lot of money and time to be here, and to miss it was heartbreaking.”

However, the couple managed to make the trip an unforgettable experience despite the unexpected turn of events.

Kaleb proposed to Kaitlin on Calton Hill, surprising his girlfriend of four years with a beautiful ring.

He said: “I was very nervous but as soon as she said yes we where both so happy.”

Kaleb originally planned to propose at the Ross in Princes Street Gardens but changed plans after realising it was “covered” in Hogmanay festival decorations.

The couple then spent the day visiting Edinburgh attractions.

He added: “Kaitlin loves Harry Potter so we had a look at the Museum of Context, and the elephant House Cafe.

“Sunset was around 3:30 so we made our way up to Calton hill was very busy but found a nice quiet spot along the side which had a great view of Arthur’s seat.”
