At least six people lost their lives on Scotland’s deadly roads during the festive season

An 85-year-old man who was hit by a car in Renfrewshire at the weekend died in hospital on New Year’s Eve, police said.

It takes the total number of people killed on Scotland’s roads during the festive season to at least six, with several more seriously injured.

John Allan was walking on Beith Road in Johnstone when he was struck by a red Toyota Corolla at around at around 8.30am on Sunday, December 29. Mr Allan was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, where he died on December 31.

Three more people died in separate car crashes on Hogmanay, including a 70-year-old woman who was the victim of a hit and run in Paisley. The pensioner was struck by a white car on the town’s Barrhead Road at around 7pm. The vehicle failed to stop and a major police investigation is underway.

A 53-year-old man died in a single car crash on the A83 near Tarbert in Kintyre at around 7.30pm. Earlier in the day, a young woman was killed and four people were rushed to hospital after a crash involving three vehicles on Standing Stane Road in Fife.

The 26-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 22-year-old man who was a passenger in the BMW she was driving was injured and taken to Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital for treatment. Three more people were injured in the same incident.

On Christmas Day, David Buckley’s Moto Guzzi V100 motorbike was involved in a fatal crash on the A811 near Stirling. His family said in a statement: “Our darling Dave will be forever missed and never forgotten. He was a wonderful father, husband, son, brother, uncle and friend to everyone who knew him.”

A 65-year-old man was killed on the M74 near Glasgow on Sunday, December 22. He was driving a Porsche Boxter which collided with several other vehicles before hitting the central reservation at Rutherglen.

Mother-of-two Ashleigh Watson, 31, from Inverness, died after a crash on the A9 on Friday, December 20. A 35-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries after the same incident at Inshes. Pals of Ashleigh, a hair stylist, took to social media to pay tribute to a “beautiful soul”

Meanwhile, a 57-year-old male cyclist was left fighting for his life in hospital after being hit by a car in Glasgow on Monday, December 30. And on the same day, an 87-year-old female pedestrian left in ‘serious’ condition after being hit by a Ford Fiesta in Edinburgh.
