Arson investigation after fire at derelict Kent Flour Mills

Police are investigating a blaze at a derelict Kent flour mill. Officers believe the fire at the building in Ashford was started deliberately.

Kent Police was called to the Flour Mills building in East Hill at just after 11.15pm on Friday (December 27). At the height of the incident, ten fire engines were at the scene battling the flames.

Mace Lane was closed until Saturday afternoon, with people in the area and Ashford town centre warned to keep windows and doors closed because of smoke billowing from the blaze. Kent Fire & Rescue Service said no injuries were reported in the fire.

On Tuesday (December 31) police said further enquiries have now led to the fire being treated as suspicious. Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Kent Police said in an appeal: “Detectives would like to speak to anyone who saw anyone entering or leaving the building around the time of the fire. Drivers with dashcam footage from the area around that time are also encouraged to contact officers.

“Anyone with information should call Kent Police on 01843 222289 quoting reference 46/218902/24. You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or complete their online form.

The building was transformed into Ashford’s first discotheque – Dusty’s – in 1981. It later became Flatfoot Sam’s, Cales and Liquid & Envy but has been empty since September 2014.

The car park at Flour Mills car park has been closed following the fire and due to strong winds predicted over New Year. Ashford Borough Council says the decision was made due to “health and safety reasons”.

The council said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will of course update residents once the car park has been reopened. Thank you for your understanding.”

Information about alternative car parks in the area can be found on the council website here.
