Armed police make machete discovery after car halted on Nottingham street

Armed police seized a large machete and knife after stopping a car on a Nottingham street. Officers halted the vehicle on Manvers Street, Sneinton, after it aroused their suspicions at around 12.20am on Tuesday, January 14.

Nottinghamshire Police said they found the weapons when the car, as well as its two occupants, were searched. Two men, aged 37 and 49, have been arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon in public.

The 37-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after a roadside drugs wipe revealed traces of cocaine and cannabis. Inspector Christian Chell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “The officers involved in this stop did a great job following their policing instincts after suspecting this vehicle could be involved in criminality.

“That decision ultimately led to two bladed weapons being taken off the streets and out of harm’s way. It really should go without saying but there is absolutely no excuse for anyone to have either of these offensive weapons in their possession while out and about in the community.

“The same goes for anyone thinking of getting behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, which is an incredibly dangerous thing to do.”
