Andre Gray: Latest on future of experienced Plymouth Argyle striker

The future of Plymouth Argyle striker Andre Gray, whose short-term contract with the bottom-of-the-table Championship club ends tomorrow (Friday), has yet to be resolved.

Gray signed a three-month deal when he joined the Pilgrims as a free agent in early October after a long-term hamstring injury to Muhamed Tijani, who has still yet to return to action. The 33-year-old has gone on to make five starts and five substitute appearances, and came off the bench in the closing stages of the 2-2 draw against Bristol City on New Year’s Day.

Argyle first team coach Kevin Nancekivell, who has taken temporary charge of Argyle along with injured club captain Joe Edwards after the departure of Wayne Rooney earlier this week, confirmed Gray had been at Home Park today (Thursday).

The Pilgrims will play their fifth game in 15 days when they take on Stoke City, who have appointed former Coventry City boss Mark Robins as their new manager, at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday lunchtime.

When Nancekivell was asked whether the experienced Gray would be in the squad against Stoke, he replied: “Do you know, we haven’t got that far yet. That’s discussions to be had.” With Tijani not expected to return to playing until later this month, Argyle’s current striker options are Ryan Hardie, Michael Obafemi and Gray.

Argyle are expected to be busy in the January transfer window and they are close to completing the signing of attacking midfielder Michael Baidoo from Swedish side Elfsborg.

The 25-year-old Ghana international has been in Plymouth for the last few days and watched Argyle play Bristol City from the directors’ area of the Lower Mayflower Grandstand, accompanied by his father.

“Someone said he was in the crowd,” said Nancekivell when asked about Baidoo. “That’s in the hands of the people above me and the recruitment team to see if there is anything going on there.”
