All the earthquakes to hit North Wales in 2024 as latest recorded on Boxing Day

North Wales recorded another earthquake over the Christmas period. The epicentre of the last to strike the region for 2024, was Corris, in Gwynedd, on Boxing Day, according the British Geological Survey.

It was recorded at a depth of 4km and a magnitude of 1.0, at 3.33pm. There was no additional information on the BGS website as to whether it was felt by anybody.

The latest quake follows three to be recorded in North Wales during September. The first struck on Monday, September 2, with the epicentre at Llangaffo on Anglesey, according to the BGS.

It was recorded at a depth of 1.3km with a magnitude of 1.3. However the quake doesn’t appear to have been widely felt. The BGS report said it was “felt by a single household in Niwbwrdh, around 2km from the epicentre, who reported ‘a slight shaking and a faint rumbling'”.

The epicentre of the second was at Pant Plas in Gwynedd, 5km south of Penygroes, on Saturday, September 7. Again it had a magnitude of 1.3, at a depth of 15km. There was no additional information as to whether this quake was felt. At that point, they were the fifth and sixth to be recorded around the region during the previous nine months.

The first was in the small rural village of Carmel, in Gwynedd on December 20 last year. It was at a depth of 19km, with a magnitude of 1.8 and was felt two miles away, at Rhydlios, according to data recorded by the BGS.

Then a larger quake hit Eryri, which was described by one witness as “a roar like a strong wind”. It was recorded at 2km below ground near Foel Grach in the Carneddau mountains, on February 8 this year.

The third was on March 3 this year with Llangwm, in Conwy, the epicentre, measuring 0.9, at a depth of 12km. Then an earthquake in the Irish Sea was felt as far away as Llangefni, on Anglesey, during July. The epicentre was in the Irish Sea at a depth of 12km, with a magnitude of 2. It happened at 3.26pm in the afternoon.

While some on social media said they felt the quake, others said they didn’t notice anything. One person said: “Didn’t feel a thing,” while another responded: “Wow, I wouldn’t have thought you could miss it.”
