Aerospace pioneer Corinne Matthews receives prestigious global recognition

A high-flying member of Somerset Council staff has been recognised for her outstanding contributions to the aerospace sector.

Corinne Matthews, the Council’s Energy and Aerospace Sectors Lead, has received an Honorary Companion Award from the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) following outstanding work with Somerset Council and the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership.

The RAeS awards ceremony took place in London, celebrating significant achievements and innovations in the global aerospace community. Leaders in aviation and aerospace were honoured for their work ranging from space innovation to humanitarian aid and breaking social barriers through flight.

The Honorary Companions are the one of the world’s highest distinction for aerospace achievements and Corinne joins a small list of women who have received this award since it was first made in 1920.

Her award is for advances, innovation, excellence and long service that has made a significant impact on the local aerospace industry.

Recently, Corinne has been working on the Future Flight Innovation Zone (FFIZ) which saw the first all electric flight take place from Exeter airport a couple of years ago. This has kick-started an eco-system of sustainable aviation and advanced air mobility experts to support the continued growth of future flight technologies in the region.

The RAeS annual awards highlight individuals who have made exceptional contributions through major technical innovations, outstanding leadership, or work that furthers the aerospace field.

Corinne stated, “I am honoured to receive such a prestigious award in the aerospace industry. It was a wonderful surprise and completely unexpected. Significant achievements have been made in this field, and it was excellent to converse and share ideas with other experts at the awards ceremony.”

“Notably, there were only a few women in attendance, and I hope this recognition helps to challenge stereotypes and barriers for other women and girls considering careers in the sector. The industry is constantly evolving, and I am pleased to have contributed and to be recognised for my work.”

Councillor Mike Rigby, Lead Member for Economic Development Planning and Assets, said: “We are proud of Corinne’s amazing achievement and the contributions to the local aerospace sector. Her recognition by the RAeS shows her hard work and vision. Somerset Council looks forward to her continued support and further contributions to the aerospace sector.”
