Adding handful of one food to your daily diet can help to boost brain health

One Christmas leftover could provide improved mental clarity for 2025. While the fog of the festive season starts to clear, a cheap cupboard staple could be boosting our brains.

Walnuts, already recognised to help lower bad cholesterol, can also have a significant impact on brain health. According to advice shared by CardPlayer Lifestyle, walnuts have been found to enhance memory retention, sharpen focus and even help delay cognitive decline.

Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin E, the humble walnut can often be found in seasonal nut selections. Inexpensive to buy, the experts have dubbed them the ‘5p wonder food’ for cognitive clarity.

Dr. Emma Patel, a nutritionist with expertise in brain health, supports the advantages of this readily available snack. She said: “Walnuts are a perfect choice to maintain and boost brain performance. Their unique nutrient profile supports healthy neural connections, aiding critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.”

The doctor added: “Regular consumption could make a noticeable difference in cognitive function over time.”

The brain-boosting claims are supported by extensive research. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition and Neuroscience found that individuals who incorporated walnuts into their diets experienced improved working memory and faster information processing.

Another study from UCLA linked walnut consumption to better cognitive test scores in adults across various age groups.

Just a small handful each day equivalent to around 30 grams can provide a significant nutrient boost for your brain. Sprinkle them over your morning porridge, blend them into smoothies or enjoy them as a standalone snack.
