Aberdeen Market, Union Street and Beachfront latest with updates on January 2025 works issued

The Granite City is undergoing its biggest changes in decades, and after the festive break work is set to ramp up across three sites in Aberdeen city centre.

Construction was paused on Friday, December 20, and will resume on Monday, January 6 after the New Year celebrations are long done and dusted.

All three sites at the beachfront, the new market building, and along the Granite Mile were secured during the break, temporary fencing will be secured and dismantled with the welfare cabin, storage container and skips temporarily moved from the site at Union Street Central.

The carriageway within the temporary fencing area was be swept and checked and made available for public use during this period, but it’s soon set to see more work commencing in the coming days.

Here’s a look at what will soon be taking place across the city come the start of 2025.

Union Street Central

Much like the tail end of 2024, investigation works will be taking place along the high street, with teams set to work on the area near the Tag Heuer watch shop near the turning for Belmont Street.

A 30-metre trench is set to be dug to search for any undiscovered services, with teams having recently discovered the former tram tracks nearby that used to transport locals up and down Union Street decades ago.

The temporary works will be enclosed with Heras fencing and will proceed towards the current main construction area. Access and deliveries to businesses will continue as normal, one way west to east along Union Street Central.

Aberdeen Market

Next month will see works begin to install a steel framework in the former British Home Stores building and reinforcing the concrete walls of the former market building.

The work is being carried out in preparation for the next stage of the programme, with the old BHS shop set to become a new entrance to the £50million building.

Works will resume in January to install drainage and services across the play park and events field sites.

Once that is completed, the construction of the new skateboard area in the play park and preparations for the new amphitheatre in the event field will commence, while improvement works to paths and viewpoints on the Broadhill will continue.

Works will also commence on stripping out the former beach leisure centre in preparation for the demolition of the building later in the year.
