Abandoned Edinburgh shop set to be turned into ‘speciality high quality cafe’

An abandoned Edinburgh shop on a busy street could be transformed into a speciality cafe.

Plans have been submitted to council planners for the change of use at 29 Home Street from retail to cafe and hot food takeaway. The unit previously housed XL Electricals Ltd before it shut down.

The applicant has expressed a desire to open a “high quality” coffee and Asian tea establishment supplying pastries and light bites with packed Asian tea and coffee also being sold on site.

Mr Pohsuan Wang believes there is a gap in the market to promote and sell Asian tea and the cafe’s primary service will be grab-and-go, catering to “the fast-paced lifestyles of customers.”

The cafe is also set to create local employment opportunities and benefit from indoor seating with internal adjustments proposed. The business would also be open from 8am-6pm daily.

In a planning statement submitted to the council the Mr Wang wrote: “While the majority of our offerings will be designed for takeaway, we will also provide limited seating for on-premises consumption, ensuring flexibility and convenience for our patrons.

“Additionally, the majority of the food will be prepared and cooked off-site, delivered to the café, and reheated on-site, ensuring efficiency and maintaining high standards of food quality.

“The introduction of this café will contribute positively to the local economy by creating new employment opportunities and supporting local suppliers. We anticipate hiring a diverse team, including both full-time and part-time positions, thereby fostering economic growth within the community.”
