A555, M56 and other road closures around Greater Manchester as flooding hits region

Major roads across Greater Manchester are closed due to flooding across the city today (New Year’s Day). Greater Manchester Police has declared a ‘major incident’ in the region, with flood alerts and warnings in place across the region.

Amongst the roads closed in the area is the A555 Airport Relief Road. The road is shut to traffic in both directions between B5166 Styal Road to A5102 Woodford Road – with photographs showing a number of cars submerged in the area.

Elsewhere in the region, a closure is in place on the westbound carriageway of the M56 between Junction 6 (Hale Four Seasons Roundabout) and Junction 7 (A556 Chester Road). A diversion route is in place as a result of that closure.

A number of other major roads are also closed due to flooding. Closures are up to date as of 2pm and subject to change:

Cheadle: A34 Handforth By Pass in both directions from Eden Park Road to B5358 Wilmslow Road (Cheadle Royal).

Delph: A6052 Delph New Road in both directions closed due to flooding and sink hole from A62 Oldham Road (Delph) to Wall Hill Road (Dobcross).

Stockport: A6188 Tiviot Way in both directions closed due to flooding from B6167 Lancashire Hill to M60 J27 (Portwood Roundabout).

Didsbury: Palatine Road in both directions impassable due to flooding from Mersey Road to Chretien Road.

Wythenshawe: White Carr Lane

Middleton: Manchester old Road

Further afield, Woodhead Pass is impassable in Derbyshire That closure is in place between Tintwistle and A616 (Flouch Roundabout).

Elsewhere, trains are facing severe disruption, with operators advising passengers not to travel and flooding reported to be causing disruption to services to and from Manchester Piccadilly.
