Flooding at the Killingworth Way roundabout has damaged the traffic lights there – and the public has been warned not to attempt to use the pedestrian crossing.
A burst water main saw huge flooding in the area, where the A189 meets Sandy Lane, and both roads were closed for much of Thursday (January 2). Though the roads re-opened in the early evening, North Tyneside Council warned motorists and pedestrians alike that the impact of the flooding would be felt into next week.
That’s because the floodwater damaged electrical components within the traffic lights, the council said, also adding that the pedestrian crossings at the roundabout had now been fenced off. People in the area have been warned not to use them.
The roundabout is close to the Camperdown industrial estate as well as Gosforth Park, Forest Hall and Killingworth itself. The A189 forms a key route to and from Newcastle.
In a statement, a North Tyneside Council spokesperson said: “The traffic lights serving the roundabout aren’t working and this includes the pedestrian lights.
“There is water damage to the electrical components and this will take time to repair. We urge all drivers and pedestrians to take extra care when using the roundabout and the surrounding roads.
“The pedestrian crossings are coned off, please do not use them. Traffic signal contractors are looking to repair the lights next week, to get the signals fully working again. All carriageways have been gritted and will get a further treatment overnight.”
Earlier, Northumbrian Water confirmed that the burst main, which was reported in the early hours of Thursday morning, had been fixed and the road was to be re-opened.
A spokesperson for the water firm said: “We have made good progress on the repair of the burst water main on Sandy Lane, Gosforth, our crews will continue to be on site tonight as we recharge the network. Almost all of the standing water has now dispersed and the road will be cleaned of debris and reopened later this evening.
“We are hoping to reopen one lane of the dual carriageway too , although traffic management will remain in place until the surface of the road is repaired.
“We would like to again thank you for your patience and understanding while our teams continue to progress the repair and partially reopen the highway.”
