999 crews on wintry North Staffordshire road as five cars crash and woman falls

Police shut a wintry North Staffordshire road after a five-car pile-up. And paramedics were also called to the St John’s Road area of Biddulph after a woman slipped and fell.

StokeonTrentLive reported yesterday how the route had to be closed between its junctions with Tunstall Road and Castle View. Residents say the part of the road was ‘pure ice’ while other families branded it ‘treacherous’.

It came after the area had been hit by snowfall and freezing temperatures across three days. Staffordshire Police say officers had first been called at around 8.30am.

A spokeswoman said: “Officers attended and around five vehicles, including a red Citroën D3, a grey Ford C-Max and a white Vauxhall Corsa were found involved in a collision. West Midlands Ambulance Service were also called as a woman had slipped and fallen in the area. We closed the road and informed highways.”

The road was able to reopen later in the afternoon. Today and a number of schools around North Staffordshire have stayed shut due to ‘treacherous conditions’ on roads and pavements.

That comes after temperatures had nosedived overnight with many neighbourhoods seeing the existing snow left frozen. Forecasters reckon it will get down to around -7C in some parts of the Moorlands overnight and -5C in the Potteries.
